What are NPC Gyms?

Inspired by the mainline Pokémon games, this system lets you challenge powerful Cobblemon trainers and earn amazing rewards as you climb the ranks. Each Gym Battle grows tougher than the last, pushing your strategy and team-building skills to new heights.

Every gym specializes in a specific type, giving players a chance to study, prepare, and craft the perfect team before stepping into the arena. Each of these trainers is inspired by iconic Gym Leaders from the main Pokémon series, letting you relive classic battles with a fresh Cobblemon twist.

Brock, First Gym Leader of Kanto

Defeat all 8 Gym Leaders, and you’ll unlock the ultimate challenge: the Elite Four—four incredibly strong trainers who will test your limits—followed by the Champion, the final battle that brings everything you’ve learned to the ultimate showdown.

What are Regions?

Did you think defeating the Champion meant you were done with gym challenges? Think again! We’ve introduced an all-new multi-region Gym Challenge system designed to keep players engaged long after their first victory. Each region brings a fresh set of Gyms to defeat, with every new area ramping up the difficulty even further.

Staying true to the main series, these challenges are inspired by the regions you know and love—starting in Kanto and Johto and eventually making your way to the most modern regions like Paldea. These Gym sets will roll out in batches as they’re fully implemented, launching first with Kanto and followed by Johto at a later date.

Every new region adds a tougher layer of difficulty, pushing even the most seasoned players to their limits… and yes, that includes bending traditional rules like the level cap.

This evolving system is designed to keep you busy, challenged, and fully immersed in the server—alongside all the other exciting features we have in store!

How can I start battling in Gyms?

Getting right into Gyms is incredibly easy and you can do this by just running the command /gym or /gyms which will bring up a GUI showing you all available regions on the server.

GUI for /gym and /gyms

From there, simply select the Kanto region and choose the Rock Gym to be teleported directly to the appropriate location. Please note that additional Gyms will only become visible once you have completed the preceding one in the sequence. [ For example, in order to challenge Lt. Surge, you must first defeat the initial two Gyms. ]

Kanto GUI showing available Gyms

Once you have selected a Gym, you will be teleported to the designated area where the Gym Leader can be found. Simply make your way to the Gym Leader and Right Click to initiate an interactive dialogue. These prompts will guide you toward the option to challenge the Gym Leader. Upon accepting, the battle will commence, where you will have the opportunity to either claim victory or suffer defeat—unless you choose to forfeit early.

Battle Confirmation Prompt

Should you lose, you may attempt the battle again at any time once your party is prepared. If you emerge victorious, the next Gym in the progression will unlock, allowing you to continue your journey. This process repeats as you work your way through all Gyms and the Elite Four within the region.

After conquering every Leader in the region, you will gain access to the next available region as it is released on the server, advancing your adventure even further.

What are Clauses?

Gym Clauses are special rules used in Gym Battles to ensure fair and balanced challenges for players to enjoy. These clauses define what Pokémon, items, moves, or battle mechanics are allowed during a gym match, helping to maintain a consistent difficulty and prevent unfair strategies.

Examples of Clauses

Here you can find examples of clauses that you'll see when competing in NPC Gyms on the server.

Examples of Clauses

1. Level Cap Clause

Challengers must not exceed the gym’s designated level cap. This ensures gym difficulty stays consistent and prevents over-levelling to brute-force battles.

2. Species Clause

Players cannot use two or more Pokémon of the same species on their team. This prevents duplicate-spam strategies and promotes more diverse teams.

3. Item Clause

Each held item may only be used once per team. For example, a player cannot have multiple Pokémon holding Leftovers. This increases strategy variety and prevents item stacking.

4. Legendary / Mythical Clause

Legendary, Mythical, or otherwise restricted Pokémon are not allowed unless specifically permitted by the gym. This preserves balance and prevents overpowering the challenge.

5. Ability Clause

Certain abilities (e.g., Moody, Arena Trap, Shadow Tag, etc.) may be banned if they create unfair stall or trapping tactics.

6. Move Clause

Specific moves may be banned if they trivialize gym fights, such as:

  • OHKO moves (Sheer Cold, Fissure, Guillotine)

  • Evasion-boosting moves (Double Team, Minimize)

  • High stall moves (e.g., Baton Pass chains)

7. Item Ban Clause

Some items may be restricted for balance reasons, such as:

  • Focus Sash

  • Choice items

  • Healing items in battle These bans depend on the gym difficulty you want.

8. Duplicate Pokémon Clause

Players cannot use two Pokémon from the same evolutionary line (e.g., two Charizards or a Charizard + Charmander). This keeps gym battles varied.

9. Sleep Clause

Only one opposing Pokémon may be put to sleep at a time. This prevents sleep-spam strategies from making the fight unwinnable.

10. Evasion Clause

Moves that increase evasion or abilities that rely on evasion mechanics may be disallowed to prevent RNG-based strategies from dominating.

11. OHKO Clause

All one-hit KO moves are banned to prevent instant win conditions.

12. Freeze Clause

Only one opposing Pokémon may be frozen at a time. While freeze is rarer in Cobblemon, some servers adopt this rule for fairness.

13. Healing Clause

Players may be restricted from using healing items mid-battle to prevent long stall tactics.

14. Weather Clause

Abusive or permanent weather strategies (like infinite Sandstorm or Rain setups) may be limited depending on the gym’s design.

15. Hazard Clause

Some gyms ban multiple layers of entry hazards (Spikes/Stealth Rock/Toxic Spikes) if they trivialize the challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ]

Q ~ Are we able to re-battle the Gym Leaders to earn more rewards?

A ~ As of now no you can not re-battle the leaders although this is something we are planning to implement in the future with reduced rewards.

Q ~ When will the next Region be made available on the server?

A ~ Ultimately we have no ETA for when the next region will be accessible on the server. Be sure to keep an eye on our Discord server for any updates that is made to Gyms.

Q ~ Can I apply to be a Gym Leader?

A ~ Since these Gyms are NPC, no players can apply to become a Gym Leader. We will eventually be adding a brand new system to benefit players who wish to become Gym Leaders with their own badge and rewards.

Q ~ Why are the Gyms NPC and not actual players?

A ~ We designed these gyms in question so that any player is able to have access to the gym at any time they wish, and to show some progression they can work towards which isn't something that fully works with player run gyms since it's dependant on how active they are, how often they'll be doing battles since they'll still be playing, we then have to keep track to make sure it's all fair for everyone involved plus so many more reasons. This is why we plan to have systems for both to keep everyone happy, with both giving badges for players to get but progression will remain locked into NPC Gyms.
