## What are TMs?

**TMs** stand for **technical machines**, which are a set of tools used within Pokemon to teach specific moves to a given Pokemon that they otherwise do not learn naturally via level up. In doing so, you gain access to a whole new range of ways to battle with your chosen partner, whether that be gaining access to a strong attack, getting type coverage sorted, or even some sneaky status moves.

## Obtaining TMs

There are two primary ways for a player to get new **TMs**, however both require some level of work from the player to get a hold of exactly what they are looking for.

### TM Machine

This device is a new addition alongside the introduction of **TMs**. This serves as a utility block that allows you to burn a chosen move onto a blank disc, turning it into a functional **TM**.

<div><figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FqBcB332yFxgKbaH7FLC9%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=4ecb26e9-0f78-46b9-8f00-23a9f8b97ca7" alt="" width="177"><figcaption><p>Open TM Machine</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FpbdH8KlADQFDIMvqPwvE%2FTM_Machine_(block%2C_closed%2C_disc%2C_active).gif?alt=media&amp;token=87be831c-971e-473d-92ae-bac8416f40a8" alt="" width="177"><figcaption><p>Running TM Machine</p></figcaption></figure></div>

Upon opening the machine, you will be presented with all the different move typings. From here you may make a selection for the type of move you'd like to burn, and then later select the specific move itself. After submitting both the blank disc, and the required materials for your chosen move, you may begin the burning process, and after a few short seconds be granted the **TM**!

{% hint style="info" %}
Be aware that the number of available moves through the TM machine will initially be limited, as players must unlock the recipes for additional moves.
{% endhint %}

<div><figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FsuikqkzQIlfDsXI26pQZ%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=dc9331bf-1fc9-4056-8c88-2274598eb3c8" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>TM Machine Home Page</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2F2rHghLICwtDNk8PgTCIw%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=37eef555-2153-48f2-beb0-cbd961f0d887" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>TM Machine Type Page</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2F2JT7dIEzpw4tj3hnJQbQ%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=c76fddd5-527c-46b2-933b-baf952739863" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>TM Machine Move Page</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The materials required will always include the elemental gems, but may require additional resources depending on the chosen move.

### Exploration

Alternatively, players can explore naturally generated structures within the servers wilderness for a chance to find completed **TMs** inside of **Gimmighoul Chests**. These chests only spawn within structures categorised as ruins from the Cobblemon mod.

<figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FaZgemMVr9tZXOERMVqVV%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=47aff2f0-46e6-431e-a6a2-d9822ad010be" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Gimmighoul Chest Loot</p></figcaption></figure>

There exists a wide range of Ruins available from the mod, all of which are documented on the official Cobblemon Wiki. That being said, there are no tricks on locating them quicker, so one can only suggest you explore the old fashioned way and look around your surroundings until something peaks your interest.

## Unlocking TMs

New **TM** recipes for use within the **TM Machine** can be obtained via one of two methods.

1. The primary method will be through capturing wild Pokemon. Each time you capture a Pokemon which knows a move that has a **TM**, you can unlock the entry for personal use to recreate in the future.

<figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FvCmMHWpmT7faITSTXXOp%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=b27feecd-a279-4080-9471-7a2582d17622" alt=""><figcaption><p>TM Recipe Unlock via Capture</p></figcaption></figure>

2. Alternatively if you have the physical copy of a **TM** you don't yet have the recipe for, you can right click a **Data Monitor** whilst holding it to unlock it. This allows players to share **TMs** with one another.

<figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FZIUJpaWlHwSWxKge6bGG%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=839174eb-7168-480c-9490-d806bd1a0b24" alt="" width="563"><figcaption><p>TM Recipe Unlock via Data Machine</p></figcaption></figure>

## Using TMs

Much like any other consumable item, all you need to do is right click your chosen Pokemon with the **TM** to unlock it within their remembered moves, allowing you to add it to their moveset at any time from the summary menu.

{% hint style="info" %}
Pokemon typically cannot learn every TM (with the exception of Mew). As a result you can only teach a Pokemon a move it is compatible with from its TM learnset.
{% endhint %}

<div><figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FrGEEUtvVurHADiNVGAeI%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0283018a-b348-463c-a1d9-cadb41794f0f" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="https://1136757732-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FaGML4Zd5tMQdGofzRFUX%2Fuploads%2FtfyxLYOPZwzZuojcFHgW%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=824f6cf5-cf94-439d-825b-cce3eb45b706" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## FAQ

<details>

<summary><strong>Q: Why isn't my Pokemon learning the move from my TM?</strong></summary>

A: Make sure the Pokemon you are trying to teach the move to is compatible with it. Certain Pokemon only learn moves in select methods, whether that be level up, evolution, egg moves, or even not at all.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Q: Can I teach multiple Pokemon the same move from one TM?</strong></summary>

A: No, TMs are single use consumable items, meaning upon usage with one Pokemon you will lose the item. As such it's a good idea to make multiple copies of the same TM ensuring you can teach it to everyone who needs it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://wiki.mmorealms.gg/cobblemon-wiki/general-guides/a-complete-guide-to-tms.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
